Puerto Morelos Close To Cancun But Not Cancunish
Puerto Morelos is conveniently located just south of Cancun 20 minutes. But even though it sits between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen it is a laid back fishing village located on the beautiful Caribbean. You can relax and enjoy yourself without having crowds of people all around you. But you are still close enough to hit the touristy spots in Cancun and Playa Del Carmen if you desire. Playa is a short 25 minutes drive south of Puerto Morelos.
Things to do in Puerto Morelos
The Yucatan is not only rich in history and culture but it has an abundant supply to fun things to do and explore. The location along the MesoAmerican Reef makes it a great place to scuba dive or snorkel. You can snorkel just off the beach or join one of the locals on a scuba diving or snorkeling tour.
The area is a fishing village so you can easily find fishing charters to go out beyond the reef and maybe even catch your dinner for the evening. The locals refer to Puerto Morelos as a drinking town with a fishing problem. Sounds like a funny moniker to me. It is not much of a party town but you can live music in the evening to enjoy along with some cold beverages.
The National Reef Park of Puerto Morelos is a fun educational way to learn about the second largest reef in the world and its ecology.
Sticking with a swimming and nature theme. The area is also rich with numerous cenotes. A cenote is a natural occurrence typically found in areas of limestone bedrock. Over time the groundwater can erode the limestone forming a natural sinkhole. The ground water fills up the sinkhole turning it into a natural underground swimming hole. Some cenotes are remote and are free to use. Some have limited facilities and may charge a small admission. Even if you go to one that requires a few pesos it is well worth the experience. It is thought the Mayans used the cenotes for religious sacrifices.
But luckily for you when you visit a cenote you will not be sacrificed to the Mayan Gods. It is actually very therapeutic to swim in the cenote and a great way to cool off.
In town you will also find several locations where you can rent bicycles. This is a great way to explore the village and get supplies from the stores or just enjoy getting a little exercise.
If you want to play a round of golf then you have a few options. Since there are no golf courses in town you will have to go to Cancun (20 minute drive) or Playa Del Carmen (25 minute drive) to the closest public course. But the experience of playing golf on the Yucatan is an experience all in itself. The flora and fauna is an amazing addition to any round of golf.
Another fun way to explore the jungle is via an ATV jungle tour. The tours are lead by experienced and local guides who share so much information with you about this beautiful area. Check on available tours because some even include stops at a cenote. Nothing better than going on an ATV tour to a hidden cenote in the jungle.
At the time of this post there are no golf cart rentals in Puerto Murelos and to rent an ATV you have to be on a tour with a guide. But it is something you and your family will really enjoy.
With Puertos close proximity to Cancun and Playa you will not have any problem finding something you enjoy doing. The only hard part will be leaving and going back home.

Food Options in Puerto Morelos
Just like any other beach town in Mexico your food options are diverse. Of course you will find many restaurants or stands selling homemade Mexican dishes. The tacos here are delicious and you can find some very cheaply. But you can also enjoy Italian, Asian and Caribbean cuisine. Because Puerto Morelos is a historic fishing village fresh seafood is readily available.
Fruits such as mango, bananas and plantain(not sure if it is a fruit or veggie) can be found in abundance as well. You can find tons of food options with local variations so your taste buds are in for a real treat. On hot days nothing beats some good gelato under a palm tree on the beach.
When it comes to food prices. You can find everything from cheap (delicious) street tacos to lobster dinners. So no matter what your budget or culinary taste are. Puerto Morelos offers it all. I prefer the local, low key and open air establishments when I go out to eat.
You will just have to try it all out and see what works best for you and your family. When it comes to buying groceries in Puerto Morelos you have a couple of options. But, I recommend you check out the new constructed supermarket Chedraui Selecto Puerto Morelos. You find it to be similar to the grocery stores available in the US or Canada. You can also buy precooked foods at a few stands or even an espresso.
Of course in Playa Del Carmen or Cancun you will find stores like Costco and Wal-Marts. So depending on what you want or need to purchase. If you want to join Costco a membership is cheaper in Mexico than in the US.
Puerto Morelos Accommodations
When it comes to lodging options. You will find everything available from a hostel to 5 star resorts and everything in between. The lowest price I found was a little under $20 USD and it went up to over a couple hundred dollars per night. So it really depends on how you prefer to travel and who you are traveling with. For example I found several condos for rent on Airbnb for less than $50 a night. I found a 2 bedroom condo a couple of blocks of the beach for $19 a night.
These are great options if you are on a budget but you can definitely spend as much as you want. You can not go wrong anywhere in Puerto Morelos. It is one of the friendliest towns you will ever visit. You can even find affordable options for longer term stays as well.
Getting to Puerto Morelos
Once you arrive into Cancun International Airport there are a few ways to get into Puerto Morelos. You can rent a car and drive the 20 minutes to Puerto Morelos. You can also arrange a private shuttle into Puerto. But the cheapest option is to take a shuttle bus to Cancuns central bus station. From here you can hop on an ADO bus and get off in Puerto Morelos. From where the bus drops you off you can hail a cab in get to your final destination for only a few dollars tops.
Once in Puerto you can rent bikes, walk, hail a cab or use the local public transportation system. If you see a bus just wave it down. There are no dedicated bus stops. When you want to get of yell “Alto Por favor” and the driver will pull over and let you out.
Puerto Morelos is a great place for an inexpensive Caribbean Vacation. The most expensive part will be the plane ticket. But flights to cancun are relatively less expensive than domestic flights in the US. So come on down. The best time to visit is from November to May.
